A lambda sensor, also known as an oxygen sensor, is a probe that measures the amount of oxygen in exhaust gases. Based on this data, the engine computer (ECU) regulates the fuel-air ratio so that the engine runs efficiently, economically and with fewer harmful emissions.
Oxygen measurement:
The lambda sensor measures the oxygen concentration in the exhaust gases exiting the engine. This is important because the engine needs a precise fuel-to-air ratio for optimal performance.
Signal exchange:
The lambda sensor contains a metal sensor, which is usually made up of two layers of ceramics (catalytic converter) with a platinum element embedded inside. One side of the sensor is exposed to exhaust gases and the other to air. When the oxygen in the exhaust gases is not in equilibrium with the air, a voltage is generated on the probe electrodes.
Determining the mixture:
If there is too much oxygen (too much air – the mixture is too rich), the lambda sensor will send a signal indicating that the engine needs more fuel. If there is too little oxygen (too much fuel – mixture is too lean), the sensor will send a signal that the amount of fuel needs to be reduced.
Signal transmission to the engine computer (ECU):
The data sent by the lambda sensor is then used to adjust the amount of fuel entering the engine. The ECU then optimizes the fuel-air mixture in order to achieve the best fuel economy and reduce exhaust emissions.
Emission reduction:
With a properly balanced fuel-air mixture, the lambda sensor helps reduce emissions of harmful substances such as carbon dioxide (CO2), carbon monoxide (CO) and hydrocarbons, and increases engine efficiency.
The following sensors (probes) are available:
Zirconium sensors: They are based on an electrochemical reaction between oxygen and the electrodes, which ensures accurate and stable measurement.
Titanium sensors: They offer reliable performance and quick response. They are suitable for applications where rapid adjustment of the combustion mixture is required.
We offer various models of lambda sensors, tailored to the specific requirements of vehicles and exhaust systems. Various sensor configurations enable their easy integration into the vehicle's electronic system, as they are supported by modern control units that adapt the combustion process based on driving conditions.
