DPF (FAP) particulate filters

Purpose

Diesel particulate filters (DPF/FAP) are key elements of the exhaust system in diesel vehicles. Their main task is to remove unburned particulates from exhaust gases. They are installed together with the catalytic converter and help reduce harmful emissions, which in turn contributes to a cleaner environment. Since 2009, these filters have been mandatory for all vehicles that meet the EURO 5 standard or higher.

Operation

DPF (FAP) filters are designed with a ceramic core that traps particulate matter. When the filter becomes saturated, a regeneration process is initiated, in which the soot is burned off at high temperatures and converted into harmless gases. Regeneration is automatically triggered when driving over longer distances, typically every 700–1400 km. If this process fails, a warning light appears on the dashboard, alerting the driver that either regeneration or servicing is required.

Clogging problems and causes

Clogging of the DPF filter can be caused by:

pika Urban driving.

pika Unsuitable engine oil.

pika EGR valve failure.

pika A faulty turbocharger can cause oil to leak into the DPF filter, resulting in clogging and possible damage to the ceramic core.

pika Damaged pressure sensor hoses.

Solutions and recommendations

We recommend finding the cause of the blockage or damage before conducting repairs on the DPF filter. If the cause of the issue is not eliminated, the blockage may reoccur. In such a case, it is recommended to choose a repair shop with experience in the field of exhaust systems and DPF filters.
